TravellersTM was developed, piloted and evaluated under contract for the Ministry of Health by skylight - a New Zealand based national not-for-profit organisation that supports children, young people and their families through change, loss and grief - in partnership with the University of Auckland's Injury Prevention Research Centre.
The programme is now in its eigth year, after three years of trialling, evaluation and a further two years of wider implementation in Auckland and Northland schools. The programme is currently being rolled out to secondary schools throughout New Zealand.
National Results of our 2008 TravellersTM Questionnaire:
- A total of 7377 questionnaires were completed. 7% of students said that they did not feel good about themselves most of the time.
- Of the schools that returned Travellers group participation data, aproximately 14% of their Year 9 students underwent the programme.
- The most common life experiences were moving house (50%), moving schools (40%), death of someone close (46%) and illness of someone close (43%)
- The most likely events to have a major impact on the students were the death of someone close (34%), separation/divorce in the family (30%), illness of someone close (29%) and loss of an important friendship (11%)
